Areas of support
If you’ve ever had a “knot” in your body, you’ll know how good it feels to massage it. But often, the relief is only temporary. Take tight shoulders, for example, a massage might help for a while, but lasting relief usually comes from better posture, more movement, and regular stretching. Just like physical knots, we can also experience mental and emotional knots; thoughts, emotions, or patterns that leave us feeling stuck. Counselling can help you start untangling these knots and work towards lasting change.
Below are some common "head knots" for young men.
-
Anxiety affects both your mind and body. It can cause a racing heart, tight chest, nausea, dizziness, or trouble sleeping. It can feel like you’re always on edge, but you don’t have to just push through it.
Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting around 3 million people [source]. 22% of males report having an anxiety related condition [source].
-
Depression can feel like a constant weight, making even the simplest tasks feel exhausting. It can affect your mood, energy, sleep, and even physical health. You might feel stuck, unmotivated, or disconnected from the things you once enjoyed.
1 in 8 men in Australian has been affected by depression at some point in their lives. It can increase the risk of suicide where an average of 7 men sadly take their own life every day [source].
-
We’re not often taught the purpose of emotions, so we do our best to manage them on our own. Sometimes this can lead to feeling too much or too little of our emotions which can lead us feeling distressed or numb. Young men can struggle with emotions such as sadness, anger, shame, guilt and hopelessness. Counselling can be a safe space to start exploring your emotions.
-
Gambling can be viewed similarly to any other habit or automatic behaviours you may have including driving, eating and scrolling social media. By learning how to slow down and access your thoughts, you can change your habits. Learning about the reality of gambling, including how it works, is a crucial component of gambling counselling.
-
Feeling lost or unsure about where you're headed is more common than you think. Whether it’s career, relationships, or just life in general, it’s easy to feel stuck or like you’re falling behind. Counselling can help you make sense of where you are, figure out what really matters to you, and build a path forward.
-
Grief can be tough to navigate, especially for men who often feel pressure to stay strong and keep moving forward. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or even a sense of identity, grief affects everyone differently.
Counselling provides a space to process your loss in your own way and find a path forward.
